 Casting Temperatures and Flask Temperatures

PURCHASE CASTING ALLOYS ONLINE

CASTING ALLOYS PRICE SHEETS

The casting temperatures given in the table are suggested starting temperatures. This results in good casting for most people. You may have to increase or decrease these slightly (not more than 50°F)

Flask temperatures vary, depending on the size of the pieces being cast and how much fine detail they contain. Large plain pieces require a lower flask temperature, 800°-950°F, while pieces with fine detail or filigree require higher flask temperatures, 900°-1150°F. Another rule of thumb is flasks used in vacuum/vacuum assist casting should be 75°-100°F hotter than when casting the same pieces in a centrifugal machine.

Porosity - Prevention
The single biggest problem confronting the caster is porosity. By observing a few simple guidelines, porosity can be kept to a minimum

Vertical section of a cast ring

Vertical section of a cast ring showing a bad case of microporosity due to poor feeding of the molten metal. Severe shrinkage porosity at the sprue junction is due to a "hot spot"

Casting Temperatures: Add 100°-150°F to the liquidus temperature
Flask Temperature: Large casting require a lower flask temperature of 800°-950°F. Small detailed pieces require a higher flask temperature of about 900°-1150°F.
Porosity: Most porosity is caused by overheating the metal or by poorly designed or insufficient spruing.
